About Us

We Are Passionate About ReducingTraffic Congestion In Mumbai.

Are U Not?

Mumbai Environmental Social Network(MESN) is a registered NGO established in 2005. Its founding trustees are Ashok Datar (Chairman), Chetan Temkar and Rishi Agarwal. It is primarily focused in providing discipline and governance oriented information and solutions to the growing traffic congestion.

Earlier, MESN developed a web and SMS based comprehensive solution for Car Pooling and while a number of people liked it, we could not mobilize the critical mass required to make a difference to the city. We are confident that this solution was ahead of its time but it will succeed when other factors become favorable.

During last 8 months, Rahul Dandekar (a young man who studied economics in the USA) came out with some unique concepts and designs with the help of other team members of MESN which are applicable for Indian traffic conditions such as:

  • Lane and Traffic management
  • Use of space under the flyovers
  • Carving out bus lane wherever possible, even under constraints
  • Dedicated right turn lanes at junctions to reduce conflict and improve throughput
  • Intelligent use of plastic cones to improve lane discipline and throughput
  • Use of videography to compare the “Before” & “After” situations.

Solutions based on these concepts are implemented at Mahim and Haji Ali and proposed under Vakola flyover as well as traffic junctions at Chembur Naka, Prateeksha and VT. This has been possible due to excellent encouragement and support from Mumbai Traffic Police, Municipal Corporation, MMRDA, MSRDC & IL&FS. You will find the videos and photos in other parts of this web site. We would like to give special thanks to the Traffic Police to experiment with our ideas and provide continuous support on site.

Growing traffic congestion and deteriorating commuting situation is not an issue for coffee table discussion anymore. The traffic jams are spreading all over the city and now the peak time is throughout the day on main arteries! Hundreds of crores are spent every year for widening of roads and adding new flyovers but traffic jams are only getting worse! Can we do nothing and watch helplessly? We want to inform and engage Mumbaikars about this issue. While implementing rail projects, we should focus on

  • Collection of “intelligent information “ on traffic and transportation in Mumbai
  • Undertake projects in traffic management through governance
  • Focus on Parking Management ( which is missing/ignored in Mumbai so far)

A number of citizens are showing interest in creative ideas and solutions developed by young Rahul Dandekar because they work! Traffic management section shows how much difference small improvements make! Keep your eyes and mind open when you travel on the roads and tell us how we can make improvements so that traveling will be easier and better not only individually but for all of us!

Discipline is not a dirty word ! And It is also possible !
This is the first step to reduce the congestion and pollution .
