World Environment Day '06

On the occasion of World Environment Day, Mumbai Environmental Social Network (MESN) used an innovative mean to sensitise the Municipal Corporation towards the decreasing tree cover in the city.

A delegation of tree lovers consisting of Mr. G R Vora, Mr. Mahesh Saran, Ms. Ayesha Khan and Mr. Amit Thakker from MESN and Mr. Manoj Motiani and Ms. Shruti Nayak from Ogilvy called upon the Municipal Commissioner at his office with a tree-shaped cake. The message which went along with the cake in a small card was, “Keep cutting and soon we will have no day to celebrate”

MESN wanted to check whether Mr. Joseph casually cuts the cake or gives some thought to what he was going to do.

The pun was not lost on the Municipal Commissioner who refused to cut the cake. Though the Commissioner found the idea interesting and stressed the importance of creating awareness, especially school and college going students.

In the evening a similar cake was presented at the Bombay Chambers of Commerce and Industry’s function “The Day after Yesterday”, Mrs. Sharwaree Gokhale, Secretary Environment was invited to cut the cake.

She was a bit more sporting even though in a dilemma. Ultimately she cut the leaves of the tree (Or, was it a cake). Other panelists also joined in the activity. More
